Historical Airships, Ghost Rockets and Contactee Craft

Unexplained flying objects were reported well before 1947. Newspapers ran the 1897 mystery airship wave, wartime pilots met phantom airships, and in 1946 Scandinavia logged more than 2,000 ghost rocket reports.

The second half covers craft tied to named contactees and close encounter witnesses. These are the ships described by George Adamski, Billy Meier, Betty and Barney Hill, Travis Walton and Lonnie Zamora. Several rest on one witness, and we note that where it applies.

Active period1946-1948 (primary wave)

Mysterious rocket or missile-shaped objects reported over Scandinavia in 1946, with over 2,000 sightings. They appeared as cigar-shaped with flames or exhaust, often crashing into lakes without recoverable debris. Swedish military investigated extensively. Initially suspected as Soviet missile tests, no conventional explanation was found. The phenomenon predates modern UFO era by a year.

A distinctive V-shaped formation of lights observed multiple times over Lubbock, Texas in 1951. Three science professors first observed the formation, followed by hundreds of witnesses and a famous photograph by college student Carl Hart Jr. The lights appeared blue-green, flying in a perfect formation at high speed and complete silence. Project Blue Book investigated but never reached a definitive conclusion.

Active period1909-1913

A wave of 'phantom airship' sightings preceding WWI, featuring craft with searchlights, propeller sounds, and apparent surveillance behavior. At a time when only a handful of primitive airships existed, witnesses reported advanced craft performing reconnaissance. The phenomenon spread across Britain, New Zealand, and the United States, fueling pre-war fears of German spy craft.

An alleged Nazi secret weapon described as a bell-shaped craft, approximately 9 feet wide and 12-15 feet tall, with counter-rotating cylinders containing a violet substance called 'Xerum 525.' Supposedly developed under SS General Hans Kammler, it allegedly killed scientists during testing with radiation-like effects. While likely a myth, the legend connects to various bell-shaped UFO sightings including Kecksburg.

Active period1950s

A wave of disc-shaped craft over Scandinavia in the early 1950s, distinct from the earlier ghost rockets. These craft appeared as classic flying saucers, often metallic and highly reflective. Norwegian and Swedish military took the sightings seriously given Cold War tensions. Some craft were tracked on radar performing maneuvers impossible for known aircraft.
