Disc, Saucer and Spherical UAP Craft

The disc is the shape that started the modern UFO era. It was a disc, or "saucer", that newspapers wrote about after the 1947 sightings by pilot Kenneth Arnold. Spheres and orbs are almost as old, with wartime pilots reporting foo fighters.

Each entry gives the first documented date, the usual location and the sightings most often cited. Many sightings of these shapes turn out to be balloons, aircraft or lights in the sky, and we say so where the record supports it.

Classic Flying Saucer/Disc

First documentedJune 24, 1947
LocationMount Rainier, Washington, USA
Active period1947–present

The modern flying saucer phenomenon began when private pilot Kenneth Arnold observed nine shiny objects flying near Mount Rainier at an estimated 1,200-1,700 mph. Arnold described their motion as 'like a saucer skipping across water'—referring to movement, not shape—but newspapers coined 'flying saucer'. These craft are typically described as circular discs, often resembling two saucers pressed together with a domed top, ranging from 20 to over 2,000 feet in diameter. The metallic, silver surface often features a dome or protrusion on top, sometimes with rows of lights or windows around the circumference.

Saturn-Shaped/Ringed Disc

First documented1958
LocationTrindade Island, Brazil
Active period1950s–present

Saturn-shaped or ringed disc UFOs feature a disc with a visible ring or band around the equator, resembling the planet Saturn. The most famous case involving this type is the 1958 Trindade Island incident off Brazil, where a naval vessel observed and photographed an unusual object near the island. Multiple witnesses, including the ship's captain, reported a 'Saturn-shaped' craft that approached the island, passed behind a peak, and departed at high speed. The photographer, Almiro Baraúna, took a series of images that showed a disc with a pronounced equatorial band.

Doughnut/Toroidal Craft

First documentedJune 1947
LocationPuget Sound, Washington, USA (Maury Island)
Active period1947–present (sporadic)

The doughnut or toroidal shape describes craft with a distinctive ring configuration featuring a central hole or void. Some reports describe craft with ring-like appendages or halos. The Maury Island object was described as doughnut-shaped, with strange debris reportedly falling from the craft. Less commonly reported than disc or triangle forms.

Saucer with Landing Gear

First documentedApril 24, 1964
LocationSocorro, New Mexico, USA
Active period1960s–present

This variant of the classic disc shape specifically features visible landing gear or legs extending from the craft's underside. The Socorro craft was described as egg or oval-shaped, 'like aluminum—whitish against the mesa background, but not chrome.' Police Officer Lonnie Zamora reported seeing landing gear supports and the craft left physical traces on the ground including indentations and burned vegetation. Project Blue Book listed the case as 'unknown.'

Foo Fighters

First documentedLate November 1944
LocationRhine Valley, Europe
Active period1944-1945

Foo Fighters were first formally reported by the US 415th Night Fighter Squadron operating over the Rhine Valley during World War II, with earlier RAF sightings dating to March 1942. Lieutenant Donald J. Meiers is credited with coining 'foo fighters' from the comic strip 'Smokey Stover.' These spherical, self-illuminating orbs—red, orange, yellow, white, or changing colors—appeared like 'balls of fire.' They appeared to follow aircraft in formation, matched speed and maneuvers (200+ mph), made wild erratic turns, never attacked, and could not be tracked on radar. Sightings largely ceased when the war ended.

Metallic Spheres/Orbs

First documentedHistoric–present
LocationGlobal
Active periodHistoric–present

Modern metallic orb reports have gained prominence since the 2000s, particularly through military sensor data. Pentagon officials confirmed in 2023 that metallic orbs are among the most commonly reported UAP shapes worldwide. Director Sean Kirkpatrick of AARO confirmed that metallic orbs have been tracked 'all over the world'. These craft are perfectly spherical, typically 1-4 meters in diameter, metallic, silver, or reflective, with smooth apparently seamless surfaces and no visible propulsion, windows, or appendages.

Cube-in-Sphere

First documented2014
LocationEast Coast, USA
Active period2014–present

The Cube-in-Sphere is one of the most unusual reported UAP configurations. Navy pilots reported encountering objects described as dark cubes inside translucent spheres during training exercises off the East Coast. The configuration appears to show a solid geometric cube suspended within a spherical transparent or translucent outer shell. These objects were observed flying at high speeds in military training areas, prompting safety concerns.

Luminous/Plasma Orb

First documented1195 CE
LocationGlobal phenomenon
Active period1195 CE–present

Distinct from solid metallic orbs, luminous plasma orbs are self-illuminating, glowing spherical objects that appear to be composed of energy rather than solid matter. They range from small (10-20 cm) to large (80+ meters). Colors reported include green, orange, yellow-white, red, and blue. The UK's Project Condign report concluded that 'novel meteorological plasma phenomenon akin to ball lightning' may be responsible for many unexplained sightings. Max Planck Institute scientists have recreated plasma orbs in laboratory conditions.

Green Fireball

First documentedDecember 5, 1948
LocationNew Mexico, USA (near nuclear facilities)
Active period1948–present

Bright green spherical objects described by one pilot as resembling 'a soft ball painted with fluorescent paint that will glow bright green in the dark.' Unlike standard meteors, green fireballs traveled horizontally, appeared larger, and left no debris or craters despite extensive ground searches. They were concentrated around sensitive military installations. Dr. Lincoln LaPaz led the investigation but no meteorite fragments were ever found. Project Twinkle was established specifically to study the phenomenon.

Sea Mine/Spiky Sphere

First documentedNovember 9, 1979
LocationDechmont Law, Livingston, Scotland
Active period1979 (limited documented sightings)

These smaller objects are described as spherical with protruding spikes or appendages, resembling naval sea mines. In the Robert Taylor incident, they were reportedly deployed from a larger dome-shaped craft and appeared to function as grabbing or propulsion devices. Two 'mine-like' spheres emerged from the dome craft and allegedly seized Taylor. Ladder-shaped ground marks were found where they were reportedly positioned. Taylor's clothing was torn during the encounter.
