The princess discovered the plot and threw the oil on a boulder, the enchanted boulder rolled and crushed Singhia. With his dying breath, he cursed the town to destruction. Shortly after, Bhangarh was invaded and the princess was killed; all the townspeople died and their spirits haunt the ruins.
The Ascetic’s Curse
An older legend tells of a Guru Balu Nath who lived in meditation on the hill above Bhangarh. He permitted construction only if the buildings’ shadows never touched his meditation spot. A later king built a palace high enough to cast a shadow on the guru, and the angered saint cursed the town to be destroyed. The town was indeed later invaded and decimated, and the curse prevents any structure from having a roof.
