In May 2007, a farmer in the Mexican town of Metepec claimed to have captured something that would generate years of controversy, scientific examination, and unresolved debate. According to his account, Marao Lopez discovered a strange, small creature caught alive in a rat trap he had set on his property. The being, unlike any animal Lopez had ever seen, was allegedly kept alive for several days before being drowned in acid and preserved. The body that resulted from this alleged capture would undergo multiple scientific examinations with results that ranged from claims of unknown DNA to accusations of elaborate hoax. The Metepec creature remains one of the most physically tangible yet unresolved mysteries in modern cryptozoology.

The Discovery

According to the account that emerged in 2007, farmer Marao Lopez of Metepec, a town in the State of Mexico, had set traps to control the rat population around his property. When he checked his traps, he found something entirely unexpected: a small, living creature that bore no resemblance to any rat, any animal, or any being he had encountered in his life. The creature was alive, caught in the trap but not killed by it, and it looked at Lopez with what he described as unsettling awareness.

The being was extremely small, with a body configuration that seemed to mock the proportions of a human infant while being clearly something else entirely. Its head appeared disproportionately large for its thin, fragile-looking body. Its eyes were oversized, suggesting either adaptation to low light conditions or simply alien physiology. The creature’s limbs were thin and spindly, and its body appeared hairless, the skin smooth and strange.

The Captivity

Lopez claimed that he kept the creature alive for several days following its capture. During this period, he allegedly observed its behavior, attempted to feed it, and watched it with the fascination and fear that such a discovery might reasonably inspire. The creature’s movements, its apparent intelligence, and its completely unfamiliar appearance convinced Lopez that he had found something unprecedented.

Eventually, according to his account, Lopez grew frightened enough of his captive that he decided to kill it. He drowned the creature in acid, a method that had the additional effect of preserving the body. Whether this decision stemmed from fear, from a desire to prevent the creature from escaping, or from some other motivation remains unclear. What is certain is that the killing preserved a physical specimen that could be examined by others.

The Physical Specimen

The preserved body of the Metepec creature presented characteristics that have never been satisfactorily explained. The specimen displayed an oversized head with large eye sockets, a thin and seemingly fragile body, and limbs that appeared almost vestigial in their thinness. The overall impression was of a being that could not survive in any normal terrestrial environment, too delicate, too strange, too unlike anything in the known biological record.

The preservation in acid had altered some of the specimen’s characteristics, making definitive analysis more difficult. However, enough of the original structure remained that examination could proceed. The body would eventually pass through multiple hands, each new owner subjecting it to some form of analysis or simply displaying it as a curiosity.

Jaime Maussan’s Involvement

The Metepec creature came to wider public attention through the involvement of Jaime Maussan, a Mexican journalist and television personality known for his interest in UFO and paranormal phenomena. Maussan obtained the specimen and subjected it to various forms of analysis, bringing in experts who attempted to determine what the creature might be. His promotion of the case brought international attention to the Metepec discovery and ensured that it would not be forgotten or dismissed without examination.

Maussan’s involvement proved controversial. His reputation as a promoter of unexplained phenomena led some to view the creature with heightened skepticism, suspecting that commercial or entertainment motivations might compromise objective assessment. Others appreciated that his attention brought resources to bear on analyzing a specimen that might otherwise have been ignored by mainstream science.

Scientific Examination

The Metepec creature underwent multiple scientific examinations with results that failed to resolve the mystery. DNA analysis produced conflicting findings, with some tests suggesting unknown genetic material and others pointing toward conventional terrestrial origins. Physical examination failed to definitively place the creature within any known taxonomic category. The results were genuinely inconclusive, neither confirming the creature as an unknown species nor definitively exposing it as a fraud.

The presence of some human DNA in the sample complicated interpretation. This finding could indicate contamination from handling, deliberate manipulation of the specimen, or some more exotic explanation that the available evidence could not support. The mixed results left room for believers to maintain that something genuinely unknown had been captured while allowing skeptics to argue that the creature was a manufactured hoax.

The Hoax Theory

The most widely accepted skeptical explanation holds that the Metepec creature was an elaborate hoax constructed from a small primate, possibly a squirrel monkey or similar species. According to this theory, someone removed the skin from the animal, manipulated its features to appear more alien, and presented it as an unknown being. The profit potential of such a hoax, combined with the cultural fascination with cryptids and extraterrestrials, provided obvious motivation.

Proponents of the hoax theory point to features of the specimen that resemble known primate anatomy beneath the unusual presentation. They argue that the DNA findings pointing toward terrestrial origins support the conclusion that the creature was manufactured from conventional biological materials. The theory provides a parsimonious explanation that requires no unknown species, no extraterrestrial visitors, no mysteries beyond human creativity and deception.

The Mystery Persists

Despite extensive examination and debate, the Metepec creature has never been definitively explained. The hoax theory remains compelling but unproven. The unknown species hypothesis lacks sufficient evidence to confirm. The physical specimen continues to exist, having passed through various owners and examinations without yielding a conclusive answer about its origins.

The case demonstrates the challenges inherent in cryptozoology when physical specimens actually exist. Unlike most cryptid claims, which rely solely on eyewitness testimony, the Metepec creature provided a body that could be examined, tested, and analyzed. Yet even with physical evidence in hand, certainty proved elusive. The specimen could be studied but not definitively explained, examined but not conclusively identified.

The Enduring Questions

The Metepec creature raises questions that extend beyond this single case. How should physical specimens of unknown provenance be evaluated? What standards of evidence should apply when DNA results prove inconclusive? How can genuine discoveries be distinguished from elaborate hoaxes when the available evidence points in multiple directions?

Whether the Metepec creature was an unknown species, an extraterrestrial being, an elaborate fraud, or something else entirely may never be determined with certainty. The physical specimen exists, the controversy continues, and the mystery remains unresolved. In this ambiguity, the Metepec creature serves as a reminder that not all questions yield to investigation, and that some mysteries may persist indefinitely despite the best efforts of those seeking answers.
