The Paris Catacombs

Beneath the City of Light lies a city of the dead—200 miles of tunnels containing the remains of six million Parisians.

The Empire of Death

When Paris’s cemeteries overflowed in the 1780s, the bones were moved underground:

  • Remains stacked in artistic patterns
  • Skulls arranged in hearts and crosses
  • Bones from centuries of plague, revolution, and war
  • Many anonymous, unknown dead

Only a small section is open to the public. The rest—the “off-limits” catacombs—stretch beneath the entire city.

The Cataphiles

Despite being illegal, urban explorers venture into closed sections:

  • Many become lost
  • Some never return
  • Graffiti dates back centuries
  • Secret rooms and passages exist

Paranormal Activity

The Whispering Walls

  • Voices echo from bone-lined corridors
  • Conversations in archaic French
  • Names called out in darkness
  • Laughing and crying

The Lost Explorer

A famous video shows a man exploring with a handheld camera:

  • He becomes increasingly disoriented
  • Fear takes over
  • The camera is dropped as he runs
  • He was never found

The Shadow People

  • Dark figures glimpsed in tunnels
  • Footsteps following explorers
  • Shapes that move against flashlight beams
  • Overwhelming feelings of being hunted

Cold Spots and Touch

  • Sudden temperature drops
  • Hands grabbing at clothing
  • Being pushed or pulled
  • Breath on the neck

The Altar Room

Deep in the forbidden sections lies a room with:

  • A stone altar
  • Candles that appear freshly lit
  • Evidence of recent rituals
  • An oppressive atmosphere

Documentary Footage

Multiple film crews have captured:

  • Unexplained sounds
  • Figures appearing in footage not seen during filming
  • Equipment failures in specific areas
  • Crew members overcome with panic

The official Paris Catacombs tour is open to the public. Entry to the restricted areas is illegal and dangerous.
